Importance of motivation
Motivation of students will result in better retention.
As a teacher you should try to be an expert or knowledgeable to your field of teaching. Although there are rules and regulations to follow in school and in the classroom the teacher should understand situations that might affect student's attendance and progress. Support is necessary then,be emphatic. Motivate students by assessing their progress and acknowledge what they have accomplish by rewards like giving "A" grades and adding bonuses.
Joyce,
Students really like to be reinforced and supported in their learning efforts.

This is so true. A good complimnt on a job well done goes a long way.
David,
Can't sell motivation too much. Students as you know get tired or life presents some challenges that can overwhelm them. So they need encouragement and a laugh to help them stay engaged.

I have found motivation to be the number one to increase student performance in the classroom. An uninspired student will eventually fade away. As such, I begin every session with a motivational anecdote. Ocassionally, I will even play a motivational song to inspire the students.
Lorie,
They really do get ramped up when they see that someone, in this case the instructor recognizes the job they have done. We all like to have such recognition come our way.

Excellent words of wisdom. Some students are motivated by grades. Others are motivated by hands on training. Others need a little push because they are afraid. Getting these individuals involved is the key in my opinion. All students need to know that you care or you have lost them. If you keep the conversation going within the classroom it motivates them to come back to class the next day and beyond.
I agree with your comment. I have noticed the difference in the students when they know that they accomplished the goal of an assignment. It gives them motivation to start the next goal.
Romeo,
Thank you for the balanced approach you have shared in relation to being an effective instructor. It takes compassion and discipline as well as empathy and leadership to each students.

Romeo,
I wholeheartedly agree that motivated students will result in better retention. Having been in the classroom environment for many years I know how vital it is in rewarding each student for every 'baby' success. This leads to improved self-esteem which equals success. Oftentimes, we are the only source our students have in hearing how 'great' they are.
As educators, we have the tools to change lives on a daily basis.
