As instructors I feel asthough knowing your class as a whole and each students needs is very important when it comes to motivating your students. It is also important for us to remeber that things that we feel are motivating might not be motivating to them.
Lana,
This is such valuable information because it helps you to relate to each individual student. You can connect with each student as you greet them at the door or visit after class and this build rapport.

I agree, and believe that it's important to find out information about every student from day one. I have them fill out an information sheet. It tells me specific information about them and how I can best help them achieve their goals in my class.
Ghaleb,
You mention two of my favorite words when it comes to effective teaching. Passion and enthusiasm. Both need to be present if we are going to capture the attention of our students and help them to see the value of what we are teaching.

In order to motivate students, you have to be passionate about your subject. You need to be calm and enthusiastic in the classroom.
Students feed off of your energy, and excitability isn’t a good thing when it comes to classroom management. Yet, if your students are uninspired, then you’re not helping them grow academically.
Janice,
Good point and that is why we need to offer our content in a variety of different ways. This way as a student's interest is engaged they can see how to make application of the content to their career development.

Each student can be motivated by different things. Sometimes all it takes is an interest in one aspect of the course to motivate he student and then their whole world starts to open up.
