Retention

Any idea's on how to get through to and keep a student who has enrolled because their parent wanted them to take a class/program, and they did not? I can keep some of them motivated and semi interested through out the core class sessions, but loose them when they go to externship.

Billie,
I have had many such students in my own teaching career so I can appreciate your comments around this topic. What surprises me is that they are not catching fire in their externship. My experience has been they may not like the class time or lab but get excited once they are in the field. Not sure how to answer you question other than to talk with them and see if you can help them see the value of relevance and application as a result of the externship. I would talk with them early in their program and see if you can help them move to another career field that is of more interest to them. If you can then you can help them work with their parents in relation to selling the idea of their moving into another career field.
