What I have done that has helped me in finding out what motivates the students is after sharing my background information and some experiences, I'll ask the students to write down on a piece of paper why they have decided to go into this particular career field. I read each one. This has helped me out a lot. Yes, it is definitely worth it.

So true and a lot of the motivation comes from showing students they can be successful and that the course is a part of future if they want it to be. The more examples they see the more excited they can become about what is being taught.
