Topics

I like to select topics that are in the news. So each class period we have section called "In the News", where we talk about current events and how they relate to our current course of study. I have found the sections helps the students understand the importance of what they are learning.

I use something similar in my courses as well. Generally speaking, in lectures I like to use recent or well-known examples to illustrate my point. I find it very useful to also have class discussions on current events in the news. Lastly, students are assignment individual presentations known as "current events" in which they research a recent event (pre-assigned topic) and present it to the class. They offer their insight into this event including back ground info or methods to address this issue.

Shaun,
Can you share some examples with us of how you do this? Thanks.
