Motivating Students

Being empathic is essential when a student lacks motivation. Trying to work, taking care of family needs and trying to attend school can become overwhelming. In the past, I have shared my own personal experiences so that students will realize their goals are attainable.

Bonnie,
Your last sentence really puts it in perspective. They do want to know that you care about them and their success. When they know that they increase their personal effort and their success follows.
Gary

Gary Meers, Ed.D.

I agree! Although I was young and single when I went through college the first time when I went back to college after 25 years I learned how much family and just life can "get in the way," especially when you are working towards a college degree! It is so important to empathize and be a good listener. Sometimes I can offer advice from my own personal experience. Students just want to know that you understand.
