retention
I always make a point to know as much as possible about my students so that if they need my help with anything I know about them, their home life, their family, their time restraints, etc. I think it is important in developing a rapport with your students to know what they are all about.
Hi Paul! Thanks for sharing your technique. I am awful with names and this is a good suggestion. It is one of many ways to demonstrate to students that they are important to us.

I have had great success with remembering students names. I start with the first roll call. If I don't know someones name, I will politely ask them. I then repeat it back to them while looking them in the eye.
Learning their names as quickly as possible goes a long way in showing your students that you care about them and their education. I just avoid getting too personal. It could be seen as favoritisim if you do not treat everyone the same.
