Recognition
Recognizing the students for their accomplisments, will give them a feeling of acceptance..
Hi Rory,
The acknowledging of students by showing interest in them and getting to know them is a great way to earn their respect and establish rapport with them. Both respect and rapport is essential if we are going to be successful in the classroom.

I think that as teachers we should recognize our students. Not only will they feel a sense of acceptance but they will be more likely to buy in and could be one your best students.
Even when I have found a problem with their work, after pointing out the error(s) and the possible impact of the error(s), i make sure to let them know what they did correctly. Kind of a knock them down and pick them up way of handling the students that have some trouble doing consistantly good work.
I see this everyday as I have always told my guys when they do a good job. I like it when someone tells me god job. So I know it makes them feel good.
