Regardless of age, gender or experience level, UTI is a new beginning for each and every student. It is very important that, as instructors, we get them off to a great start in their new chosen profession.
If you come across as being in a good mood it tens to put everyone in a good mood, the same as if you are in a bad mood it puts everyone in a bad mood ans this can set the mood for the entire course by how things go the first day
Hi Kathleen,
Two words come to mind as I read your forum response. Respect and rapport. Both essential elements for learner success. You are giving them respect and developing rapport with them. These two things are what will keep them coming to class.
Gary
I was drawn to your topic by the title "new beginnings." my students are high school drop outs who have chosen to attempt to get a GED. our classroom is MOST DEFINITELY a new beginning for them.
I have learned from talking with my students that many of them were considered behavior problems in school. I have created an environment in my classroom where they are welcome to discuss anything. Because of this, I was able to discuss even this topic with them. When I asked them why they never gave me any trouble, even though they had been suspended and expelled repeatedly, they replied, "Because you listen to us and don't treat us the way they did."
I think respect of my students for simply showing up shines through in my interactions with them. They have failed so many times previous to our class. I try to make sure they know they really can succeed, and that I will go out of my way to make sure they do.
fair and consistency is the best way to win a class over ,I had a class where 3 students were sent from the class, after having a chance to sit down and talk to the 3 students and get an understanding on views, they retruned to class and i had countless encounters with other students that heard about it and many have said "at least you are fair".
I also very much agree with mr Perrin cause we both teach the first class but its up to the instructors on their next classes to maintain this thru the weeks ahead.
I very much agree Mr. Perrin, as a new instructor (still in training) I have definitly noticed a differance in students attitude if the instructor is positive, fair and caring to all students.
Hello Mr. Perrin, At the beginning of our course we set off with our students on an intellectual journey, to explore the "territory" of a generative topic. Given that there are often lots of interesting points to explore, we might simply let our students follow their interests and roam where they will. But our time is very limited. We want to give our students time to explore what intrigues them, and we want to make sure they visit the important sites they might miss without guidance. Fortunately these territories are not wholly uncharted: experts in the various disciplines and domains we teach, our personal experiences, and our work with previous classes can help us to map out the landscape and pinpoint some of the most interesting and fruitful places to stop. So some parts of the journey we can leave to independent exploration, but in other parts we guide students to a few destinations that we want to make sure they reach.
Thank You,
Samuel Mariani
First impression on the first day is very important. This where all requirement and rules are exstablished.
