student retention
Students have a hard time remembering every thing they have been taught, however i have found that by seating down with them and going over the information with them it comes back to them.
Hi James,
You are right on target in working with your students when you are trying to see why they are enrolled in the program. Once you know that you can develop instructional supports that will help them to succeed.
Gary
Buy in by the students is important. When I was a student in the program I was there because I needed/wanted the information. Now some of the students are here because they have been put into a program that sounded different than what they are getting. I try to answer any question on or off topic and constantly say that "There are no stupid questions, only the ones you dont ask"
Hi Phillip,
You make a very good point about buy in by students. What do you do to help your students to buy into the course and the content you are offering?
Gary
Students have to buy into the training, as important to their future . When they buy in ,retention is less of an issue.
Hi David,
To help those students that don't know how to take notes or are not organized with their note taking you can offer them graphic organizers or guided notes. Guided notes are easy to develop as handouts and can help the students zero in on the important concepts needed for course success.
Gary
I also find that that students that take good note have fewer problems with the work - getting the other students to take note is the hard part.
A review is an important part of every day. I do one at the start of every class
I find the same isue allot of the time in theory. We cover allot of information, and it is hard to absorb it all. I try to create an atmosphere where the students know I will answer any question they have without ridicule, and I will reaproach any subject as many times is needed. I have also found that sometimes an explaination from one of the more progressive students in the class can sink in easier than an explaination from the instructor as long as it is monitored for correctness. The student may be closer to the other students level in their explaination. Hope my opinion helps someone.
