Student Retention

I order to have student retention you must first have student attention. Learning must always be fun regardless if it is youth or adult. When a person or a student enjoys what they do, they are more interested and evolved. Keeping students motivated and evolved in a positive environment will always keep retention at a high standard.

Hi Rami,
Great way to show your support to your students. They can see by your caring that you want them to succeed and your contact with them support that idea. Keep up the good work.

Some students are weary of the good grade due to some limitation of skills, but I ensure regularly to keep on pushing and to do their best. I give feedback personally and through the email system before the midfinals and before the final grades. As I review the completed projects, I send reminders of missing assigments to give them every opportunity to succeed.

The student must want to be there.

Hi Julie,
I like your comments on class polices and opportunities. Your comment about reminders is a good one as well. I know our students are adults but they do need reminders about due dates and missing assignments. I have found it is easier to talk to students later when they have not received the grade they wanted and explain to them that they missed certain assignments even though they received emails reminding them that they were due and had been missed. The response is "yes, you are right I should have gotten them in on time." Very seldom do I have a student that argues this point with me as I have evidence I have tried to be supportive and they have failed to respond via the assignments.

It is a challenge to keep your classroom "fun" and keep their attention. One of the ways to get any student's attention is to know their name and call them by their name. At the beginning of a new class, you might do a name quiz with your first name and an adjective or a color and go around the class trying to remember each name and word for each student. It makes students laugh, breaks the ice, and assists in learning each other's names. The learnativity needs to grow between the instructor and the learner so that participation and progress are both in a positive direction. Another key is to know your material, use constructive and precise vocabulary in presenting while being trustworthy and honest as a teacher and person.
I remind each new student that by following the syllabus, reading the text, asking questions, and correcting their products their results can all be a final grade of A.
