Retention in class
I really feel that retention in classes truly depend on several factors but the instructors enthusiasm and knowledge about the course can and will be inspirational to most all students of any age group.

Humor is a powerful learning tool. You are using it to help students stay focused and I commend you for that. A little laughter goes a long way in keeping the attention of students.

I think you are exactly correct.
If you can deliver the material with confidence and enthusiasm the student will repond and stay the course.
Sometimes the subject being lectured about is very dry and boring for the student and myself. I will usually mention the importance of this note is to help you sleep at night when nothing else seems to be able to help. I'll most of the time get at least a chuckle. Hey, at least I know they're not sleeping yet!

Right you are. The instructor sets the tone for the class and encourage or discourage the success of the students. This is why it is so important to be enthused and excited about the field and teaching.
