retention

I understand that business is business and the bottom line is what drive it's I also understand that with out the student there we would not have a business. So with that said, retention seems harder to reach the level at witch we need to have with the way things are going in the USA. But I can say that if we can reach the students and make them aware it is a good thing for them to stay in school by asking them what goal it is that they wish reach in life. What are the things that they enjoy and is fun to them. With this info you may be able to reach more through using this information as a tool. by tighing things that are being taught to the students with things that they enjoy doing, seeing or hearing. If this can be done early on your retention would be higher and more students would enjoy your class.

Interesting question. I wonder where my satisfaction would come from regarding a class? It is not money because we do not make that much. It has to be the students. Thank you, John

If you don't care about your students, you are in the wrong business. Where would your satifaction come from?

I like your reply Joshula. An instructor must care about the students or the students may not care about the class. I have been in many classes where the goal is just to get through the class. I found this discouraging

So as an instructor I ask the students how they are doing. I greet every one of them. I take the time to discuss issues or concerns. I also advise them that my goal is to make them think, walk and talk like a criminal justice professional. In addition I inject humor into the class room to show them I am human also. Thank you, John

Caring is important for student retention, along with knowing they can accomplish course requirements. Success in small doses helps students feel their learning and the care the instructor takes in making this happen is important.

Hi David,
Good points and good advice. Helping students to understand you care about their success is critical to them achieving success.

I believe that retention is difficult when you take the wrong approach to leading. As a confident leader you need to control the class and the pace of the information without alienating anyone. As an instructor sometimes you have students that need more attention than others for different reasons. Understanding these reasons will give you a better retention level. Simply put treat everyone as an individual and they will appreciate the time you spend teaching them therefore continuing their education
