general strategies for student retention

keep the student interested as much as you can and make them feel that they are really getting a great education

Smart idea. Current topics or relevant industry examples do help.

Let the students know you care about them; this does not mean tell them the answers; ask about their daily lives, and at the same time remind them to get out their notebooks, and textbooks, and pens, and follow along with what we are doing especially in a computer class setting.

Hi Robert,
Personally I am strong of follow up contact with students. I call and email to try to keep them engaged. I know they are adults and in college but factors come into their lives and so they at times need some contact to keep them moving in the direction of course completion.

How do you all feel about calling students who fall behind? I teach online courses and this approach seems to work as long as you can get in touch with the student. Has anybody had any experiences with calling students and the call's impact on retention?

Yes, I like to keep students interested. I like using current events in the news that relate to the course material. For example, I teach torts and there are always interested cases in the news.
