student retention
As students build on their self confidence because of specific and positive feedback, more application of the course material to their personal and professional lives, they become more invested in completing their educational goal.
Hi Christina,
This is a good point. You are right about self evaluation. It leads to improvement and growth that is so important to career development.

I agree and would add that we need to make sure that "trying" is not the reward but actually producing something and making sure that it is quality. Perfection is impossible....personally do not want to ever use that word with students. But quality... we all know it when we see it. Helping students brainstorm what that looks like is important for future self evaluation
Too often students have a hard time seein feedback constructively. When time and effort are involved people feel more "invested." I try my best to let students know they are headed in the right direction, and the work they have done is good, then let them know where I see area for improvement. Then remind them one more time of the good effort they are giving.
I agree! Too many times school is the only place where they are going to hear the good stuff, why not share it often :-)
Too often we tend to give negative feedback. I am a true believer that you should give positive feedback often and you should not include it in the same conversation where you are telling the student that they did something incorrect.
Students need to hear the positive and they need to be allowed the time to revel in it. :)
Hi Linda -
I agree. I think that anytime we as instructors can make the material more realistic and not seem like it's just coming out of a textbook we will be more successful. I enjoy the "a ha" moment my students have when they reach the poit where it doesn't just seem like stuff in a book, it's something more.
Hi Linda,
Well said. We all care more about something if we are invested in it, whether it be financial or as a fan of a sports team. By selling students on the same concept of investing in themselves and their future their excitement and buy in increases.
