Soliciting Student Feedback

I believe strongly that it is important to solicit student feed back at the end of a class. While i beleve most schools solicit instructor reviews and class reviews, I try to solicit student feed back on a more class content level. I ask them to evaluate what they have learned and what the may have wished to learn. I also ask them to offer suggestions so that, I may perhaps make the class more interesting, informative, and interactive. I know this feed back makes the student feel empowered. I bleive it also makes them feel like they are involved and at least that I care about their input.

Hi Scott,
You make a good point. Take for the feedback in the way it is intended and benefit from it.
Gary

I put this in the "be careful what you ask for" category. Constructive feedback is great, but be ready for anything when you ask for it.

I think that is a great idea to add the feedback survey as an online teacher myself. I often will email a few students that I have gotten to know well through email online and ask their feedback or suggestions in making my class better.

I would agree, When I was working on my Masters in Human Resource Dev/Adult Ed. I had one instructor that would always use a simple evaluation at the end of the night. It consisted of writing on the board. "Things you liked" "Things that we could change" I found myself doing this at the beginning of my teaching career but have to admit that I have not taken time for it in the past year or so.

I hadn't thought of doing this, but it sounds like a great idea to get the students more invovled with the learning process. I also think it is extremely important to let the students have a way to express there comments privately.

I also do this at the end of my classes. Alot of the students really appreciate that I ask for their opinion. I really appreciate recieving that information as an instructor because it helps me to improve myself as an instructor.

I also tell students if they have any comments negative or positive that they dont want to say in front of the entire class, to talk to me after. (negative or positive, I always appreciate it!)

Hi John,
Great way to bring instructional improvement to your classroom. The more feedback we have the more opportunities we have to improve and expand our teaching skills.
Gary

I know of a couple instructors who do this each class (residential) session using a short (three-question) survey that is loaded into Blackboard. I need to look into adding something similar to my online classes.
