Effective strategies for problem students

Hello,

While I agree with most of the content presented, what I feel this unit failed to address are the "problem" students who can drain instructors or disrupt the class. In reality, an instructor is not going to be able to give the same level of attention to every student in a class of 30+ students. When you add disruptive students, an instrucotrs energy can be drained quickly and they cannot give the attention that is needed to others.

My question to the group is: When you have a disruptive student, what are your techniques to making sure they fell welcome in the course along with everyone else?

I've had a few problem students.

One was repeating the class and submitting assignments for another class and getting all bent out of shape when I wouldn't accept that assignment.

They also got into a verbal dispute w fellow teammates on their group project.

Student got the grades they deserved, not what they wanted. Then they tried to go over my head and get the grades changed. It was looked into and denied.

All I can say is I kept it as cordial and professional as I could in my communications w the student, but do see how some problem students can get on your nerves. Just don't show it to them, anyway.

This is a good point. A student should not be allowed to interfere with the learning of other students. All have paid to be in the class so each is entitled to quality instruction without disruption.

I guess the answer hinges on what you are calling a "problem student". If the student in question is disruptive to the extent that they are hindering the learning of the other students I'm not sure that I want them to feel welcome in my class unless their behavior changes. Getting their behavior to change might require somewhat drastic actions.
