fun activities

I am interested in developing some fun activities for the accounting students. Can you suggest some resources?

I like all of those, especially, Being Nickeled and Dimed book.

Hi Geni,
This is a good point and one that is reinforced by your statement about their learning more when they have have the chance to use their new knowledge in activities. This helps them to see the relevancy to what they are learning.

I also find myself torn between wanting to include activities and covering the necessary material each class session. I have found, however, that by incorporating activities designed to get the group thinking of an overall concept we will be covering, they learn more than if I lectured about the subject.

I use teams to go againts each other i give a question and which team comes up with the answer get the point, i give rewards or gift cards , and they really enjoy it.

Hi Kathy,
This is a common challenge for instructors. There isn't simple solution to this challenge except to say that try a few quick fun activities and see how they work. I have found that when I introduce a fun activity the students become engaged more and then I am able to cover some additional key content at a faster, though effective pace because they are looking forward to another activity to reinforce the content.

I am having much the same problem in teaching Business Math. I am responsible for covering a certain amount of material each week, and find it difficult to include 'fun activities' during class time, without feeling as though I'm neglecting important material.

Hi Barbara,
I have taught law but I do teach courses that involve a lot technical knowledge. To get my students to retain more content I use a lot of role playing and case studies. Once they get into the cases and then act them out they really retain the content because they need it when they "perform" or report.

I teach law to criminal justice students. They seem to enjoy my classes very much, but some of them fail to retain basic information from one term to another. They are obviously memorizing, rather than learning. Does anyone have any fun activities for them?

Thanks for passing along the websites. I am going to take a look and hope to use soon.

Hi Beth,
Thank you so much for sharing these websites with us.

I just attended the IBEA conference in Indianapolis. One session with Donna M. Lefler focused on bringing video clips and online sites into the classroom environment.

They're all about finance, credit, and business.

At what level are you teaching? Creating raps is great for high school students. Thye seem to enjoy creating these on concepts they are studying, and they seem to stick with them better than me telling them.

Having students create their own business and make up relevant expenses and capital.

Making up rhymes to remember what is a debit normal balance vs. a credit normal balance.

Being Nickeled & Dimed is a good book to read & discuss.
