Retention versus Gate Keeping

With more open access-something good, we often have those who are more at risk. At the same time, we must help the institution maintain integrity. Does anyone run into grey areas?

Hi Franklin,
You make a good point in one way about retention. It is up to the student but we faculty need to do all we can to support the learning progress of students and engage them through rapport on the human level. This really enhances retention because of the personal connection.

I never really thought about it, i honestly concentrated in just being able to introduce the material as best as possible and made sure that everyone involved was understanding the material. I always figured retention was up to the student. Guess i have rethink that notion.

I have had the same conversation. Counseling out sessions are just as important to the college mission as graduating.

Grey areas are sometimes very visible and sometimes not. However, to retain the integrity of the school for ALL students and the realization that our students are adults and capable of making choices there are some students we just aren't going to keep. We can not abandon our principles for the sake of a student or two. If a student is going to leave they are going to leave and we need to let them know that the school is here when they want to come back.
