The Human Side
Most students do not view their instructors as human in my experience unless you are able to build report through sharing your life experiences. There is definitely value in sharing a few of your emotions during professional experiences in the field.
Sharing life experiences does sometimes work to our advantage as students. However, I find at times it can alienate some students especially, if they are not sure that is the field they want to be in. So you have to be careful on what life experiences you relate to the students.
Best way to quickly relate to your students and/or have them know they can relate to you.
This also helps students with their interpersonal skills.
Shayla,
Good point and so true. We need to bring the human factor to our classrooms so the students have a model from which they can learn throughout the course.
