Greetings.

It is important to have that interaction as they enter the room for the start of class.

My personal goal is to know everyone's name by the second class.

I make a seating layout with the names-this works fine if they all sit in the same places the next day :)

I have a problem learning names also. I find doing roll call at the beginning of class and even after our 20 minute break hells me twice a day.

Danny,
Create a game with yourself. Attach a significant fact to each student's name. Example, Susan Smith like to bowl. Connect bowling to her name. Make a mental or actual note in your roll book next to her name. Do this for each student. Also, repeat each student's name as it is given to you. Concentrate on that person's face. If permitted take a picture of each student and post their pictures along with their names in a folder. Review the folder just before the class. Also, review the folder throughout the class when you have a chance to refresh your memory on the names. You will quickly get the names down.

I am horrible with names!!!!! Please give me some tips for learning & remembering names quickly. Thanks

Cathy,
Easy to do and so powerful. This sends a strong signal about how much their instructor cares about them and their success. Keep up the good work.

It is very important to speak with each student that enter the classroom. I greet them by name and address each student as Mr. or MS.

I greet my students and speak to them outside the classroom as well showing them that it is a genuine care for them.

I greet my students as they enter the classroom each class period. I ask how they are and say "welcome to math class". They smile and answer back. This sets the stage for a friendly class beginning.
