Respect for all students

Showing respect to all students will show that all students are valued equally and inso doing maintain an amicable classroom experience

Juanito,
I agree. Respect has to be earned by both the teacher and the students. Once respect is earned then rapport can be developed.

I'd like to see respect earned not bestowed. The instructor can instill respect to all the students by example. Showing appropriate respect and consideration for all the students will set the tone for the class. When everybody feel they belong , then mutual respect will bloom.

Dennis,
I use the format of "Courtesy is owed, respect is earned and rapport is developed". So as we, the students and myself move through the course we can work through these three steps and have a great learning experience together. But, we must earn the respect of each other if we are going to develop rapport, if we don't then it is going to be a challenge in working together. This is something our students need to realize because for many there is an attitude of entitlement rather than effort.

I find that if you show students that you respect them, they are much more willing to do what you ask of them. Sadly, many students grow up with bad self-esteem, and it could be the instructor who is the first person who shows a student that they are intelligent beings who deserve to be respected. I have come across this many times dealing with students who have had issues with the law, or have problems at home.

Yolanda,
In cases like this such a student should be put on a behavior contract. If he doesn't abide by the requirements of the contract he should be removed from the class. He does not have the right to disrupt the learning of others and he needs to know this. Make sure you have the support of your administration if you have to remove such a student. Once such a student is removed you will be amazed at the change that occurs in the students that remain. They really appreciate it when someone supports their learning needs.

It is difficult for me to deal with a student who is constantly disruptive and disrespectful to his classmates.

Rena,
Respect leads to rapport and this is an important of effective teaching.

I agree. If you show respect to your students they will show you respect as well.

This is a great idea, one I never thought of as I am a beginning instructor. Thanks for sharing. I think it also gives the chance for adult learners to share with the newer generations what there expectations may be of the younger learner and vice versa.

I agree, treating people the way you want to be treated is elementary. This applies not only in the classroom but every!

The respect for the estudents will help you with the respect that your student return back to you at any time not just in the classroom .

I go over the classroom expectations therefore students are aware of repsecting one another on the first day as well. I give respect to all of my students and in turn they respect me and other classmates. I find that if you set the tone on the first day this becomes embedded into the classroom.

Jennifer,
Good for you. This is something that seems to be missing in a lot of preparation programs. I tell my students the first class meeting I operate on the following principles. "Courtesy is owed." Meaning I will be courteous to you as a fellow human being. "Respect is earned." I will work to earn your respect and in turn I will give you respect if you earn it. "Rapport is developed." As the course moves forward I will work to develop rapport with each of you as you will be in my field in the near future and I look forward to working with you. These three statements serve as the foundation from which we operate in terms of professional development for the duration of the course.

On the first day I give an entire lecture on respect and what it means to be respectful and respected. This seems to prevent many conflicts within the classroom and ebcourages students to participate because they know they will be respected.
