Making a Difference

It is important to let adult learners know that the education they are getting will be instrumental in bettering their life prospects and that they will make a difference.

Anthony,
Good saying and one that needs to be reinforced over and over with our students.

I like to tell my students that they will get 100% return on what ever they invest in their life.

Jeanne,
I am a quote fan as well. There is much wisdom in the quote you listed because as the learning leader for our students it is up to me to set the tone for the class.

I like all of the quotes I have read on the forum. The quote I share with my students is one I live by, and ask them to do the same. That is: "Be yourself on your best day." I don't want them to compare themselves to others, just give the best they have to offer that day. I let them know that some days are better than others, and that is ok.

Mark,
I like this quote. It really sets the stage for success. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Staying on the quotes, I share with my students-"The definition of pride---- when you put forth work + time + energy.....the outcome is pride." I share this with my students at the beginning of each class. I tell them to apply this equation with EVERYTHING they do in life. In this case, by the feeling of pride, it will propel them to make a difference.

Teresita,
Good point about helping them seek solutions rather than letting the problems dictate their future. The more support we instructors can provide along these lines the more engaged our students will be.

Some adult students feel that there is so much that they can handle and these make them discouraged on moving forward to success. Reasons like being out of school for the longest time tripled with family and work concern makes them think that it is extremely difficult for them to comprehend lost stored knowledge. When these students can be presented with facts of structured method of working around issues and realize that it is doable, there is a likelihood that they will see that success is extremely possible after all.

Anna-Marie,
I like your quote. It reinforces the student concept because being a student now leads to rewards later on. Students need to see that even we instructors have been where they are. We are former students that studied, struggled and accomplished our goals as a result of hard work and much effort.

I use a quote. " When you make short-term sacrifices you can obtain long-term rewards." It usually hits home for them then. We all have goals as adults but to make the treatch to school, while working fulltime jobs, maintaing households or even not working due to educational obligations is raelly hard and definately worth the effort.
