having students know that we are a "safe haven" for them is important sometimes the only person they can talk to is us. by being fair and impartial we can help them.

This is the human factor in teaching and we need to remember to make it a part of our interaction with students so they will see us a someone that they can respect and have rapport with.

I love this. If a student sees an instructor as someone they can approach outside of class, they are more likely to see you IN class.

This is an important part of being a teacher. We may be the respite they get from very challenging lives. If we can provide support and encouragement as they work toward gaining the skills and knowledge needed to change their lives for the better then we will have done them a major service.
