The first 5 minutes as if it were a job interview

Grab your students during the first 5 minutes of every class. Treat it as if it were a job interview or a broad-way play. Perception is key. We are visual interpreters of the immediate environment. Enthusiasm is contagious. Use some "show and tell" right out of the gate. Project yourself with your voice, attitude toward the subject matter, and visual stimuli.

I try to impress upon my students that being on time is important, and I hear that this is not a job and that if they were getting paid they would be on time. I tell them 2 things....1) you ARE getting paid (your grades) and good habits (being on time) need to happen. That is why I cover a lot in the first part of class, to get them to be there on time, motivated.

Troy,
Good plan because being prompt is something that the workplace requires so the students need to start training to be on time while still students. This will make their transition to employment much easier.

I always begin on time and cover quite a bit in the first fifteen minutes. Students get bored after that and it also encourages students o be on time and ready at exactly 0800.

DAVID,
Like the way you ramp up your students and get their excitement factor going in the class. This sets the stage for enthusiasm and increased learning which in turn promotes student success. A win win situation for sure.
