FIRST DAY INTRO TO CLASS

I believe the first day of class is the most important day in terms of setting the tone. As this course mentions, the importance of greeting the students, giving an intro of yourself and allowing for introductions of who they are seems to break the ice. I also have found giving students an intro of what they will be learning throughout my term and how it will be applied in their chosen career field on the first day of class gives my lectures meaning and importance. The students mentality changes from this being a required course for them to finish to instead one of which they will need to do their job.

I agree with your statement. I find it also helps students to open their eyes and become sociable with one another once they find out there is someone in the class for a similar purpose to theirs.

Having the attendance roster before the day of class helps to prepare the instructor for how many students are in the class, then to find if any students you have had before, and their major course of study can help. I also find if I introduce my self when the students enter the classroom, then again when the class begins, and to allow each student to introduce themselves and their course of study, will help for all to have an opportunity to know not only the instructor, but their class mates. From there to begin to make the classroom rules and tips for student success in the course is important to reduce fears.

Jill,
I do as well because if they cannot identify how the course will impact them as an individual they do not have a clear understanding of why they are in the course. They need to see the connection between courses taken and career development.

I find it very important that each student identifies how the course will impact them as an individual.
