Motivation
Both intrinsic and extrisic motivation , help to a great extent the learnig process, I also will give variety of options to the students as regard the oral report according to the information I learned from this module
Tanya, well stated. Public speaking is rated higher than death on the total list of fears and for some, the efforts needed to get in front of a classroom and provide a presentation will require breaking down of more barriers. Create the small wins in order to achieve the larger win of performing the presentation in front of the group. If they can live outside their comfort zone in one area then they will be more likely to live outside their comfort zone in others.

I also believe that it is good for those challenged with oral presentations to practice the skill. Same thing with those challenged with written reports. I think a choice of either/or allows them to go with what's easiest for them. Stepping outside of the comfort zone is where real growth begins!
Sam, what techniques do you use to drive extrinsic or intrinsic motivation of your students?

I've found that there must always be a balance between extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Without one AND the other, the student may eventually stray off track.
Bobbe, I understand what you are saying and I think there are some that agree. I have been in higher education for close to 12 years now and have seen some amazing things with respect to those that could not "cut the mustard" as you put it. I was one of those students at one point and when I attended a big ten college was told by several of my instructors that I was in the wrong place and maybe college was not my thing. I was incredibly fortunate in that I met another instructor that felt maybe he could assist me and together we figured out some study habits that really made a difference. I have always tried to model my professional educational career around what I learned during that experience and have seen many of my students that more than likely not succeed in a traditional university go on to accomplish some great things and these accomplishments simply would not have been possible without those instructors to went way overboard. You obviously have to find what works for you and your students and I am confident you have your success stories as well which is what is it all about. Focus on your way of teaching and motivate your students as you feel they best can be motivated but I also feel there is room and actually a need for those that are willing to go a little overboard.

I recall back in the old days of learning when required oral reports were a must. I would freeze. I feel that it would be more motivational if you had the option of writing it out. Not everybody can stand up in front of a class and have a good presentation. I feel that writing things out on paper has it's pluses. The rewards really caught my attention though. The school I am teaching at, some of the instructors go way overboard. I might be old fashioned, but we are adults, and I think you just have to cut the mustard. They give out stars here, and I find that really childish. I feel a certificate at the end of the course, or graduation is enough. I feel that making up a test or attempting to bring your scores up is a very adult way of motivating an adult.
Both Intrinsic and Extrinsic are both a great asset to students and can enhance their desire.
Yes Robert, both you and Hany make a really great points. By providing students with a choice you acknowledge there are different styles of learning and in order to impact the learning process, different delivery techniques are required. Different delivery techniques can come by way of providing multiple avenues for students to complete the same learning outcomes by submitting different types of assignments. The bottom line is a focus on ensuring the students understand the objectives of the curriculum. This can be accomplished in many way.

I like the idea of options for the papers due. Some of my students freeze when they hear "paper"! Projects and oral reports work better for some.
