Intrinsic Goal Planning
In my clasroom i explain in detail of how a production schedule will increase their self esteem and belief system if they put it to use. The outcomes is that they are able to complete all of their given cooking tasks and allows them to stay on track and the best part is that their reward is to complete all of their dishes.
Peter, setting clear expectations is always a critical part to a successful class.

It is very interesting the diverse students who are now in the higher education system.
I personally find it very intoxcitating to see the growth of most students who I have the oppertunity to come across in this educational field that have helped me see the little wins we achieve have all come from their experiances in the classes.
I have learnt from them that a little time at the begining of each term to discuss their true feelings about their goals, fears and expectations in the the class has enabled me to really direct my attention on to their specific needs/objectives, and adjust my teaching to their wants/goals in that arrangement.
I am also to match like students in a peer learning and growth enviroment so they all benifit.
Also we daily, weekly evaluate how much growth(wins) has happened since the begining of the class and how we move forward in their personal challenges to accomplish the greater goal of mastering the necessary objectives of the class.
I also tell them that all my success comes from my ability to grow from the team experiance., and they are more than happy to give their best.
Jimmie, well stated. Building upon the small successes can help in building self confidence and also trust with the course and curriculum.

I agree with the power of small wins. I try to communicate with my students about how each lesson will impact their current or future career. In many cases a class, a quarter, a year or degree can be a "small win" in the pursuit of much larger aspirations.
Tim, creating small wins within the curriculum can be a very powerful tool towards building more confidence in your students. What are some of the class activities you are setting up to ensure students have those early win opportunities and still challenge them to meet the necessary academic rigor required in higher education? Thanks for anything you can share.

Self esteem might not be something we can teach but it's something we help students develope. Reminding them of how far they have come and getting them to recognize thier development helps them cope with the work they still have to do.
Glenn, great job helping students associate real-world actions with classroom assignments.
