Daily Quizzes

I have always given daily quizzes in my classes in all different formats. I never thought of them in terms of providing a sense of security to my students. I think it is important to help them believe in themselves. Alot of my students are coming from unfortunate situations and very porr educational backgrounds so the thought of excelling in college is already difficult for them to see themselves doing. I was happy to read that my instructional methods can also add to their sense of knowing they can do what I require of them.

Kathy, what options do you offer for a student that is late and it was totally out of their control? Is the best policy for them to just remain at home if they cannot be on time? Thanks for anything you can share.

I give daily quizzes for 2 reasons: it motivates them to study and look over the previous day's lecture and to do well; and it motivates them to be on time to class. If they are late, no quiz.

Tiffany, using assessment to reinforce learning and transfer of knowledge is a great technique. How to present the process to the students is critical as well to their overall understanding of the importance you place on the assessments as a tool used to enhance their learning of the subject matter.

I never thought of daily quizzes as providing a sense of security either, until recently. A student had a hard time starting the new term in regards to the assignments, but the weekly quizzes definitely helped motivate them to study and increase their grades. They began to improve, not only in their weekly quizzes, but their unit exams and their assignments as well.

Brenda, well constructed and short assessments can be very useful and productive. I would also suggest mixing things up from time to time such as adding an active learning assignment and include some group discussions where students can rate the responses of their peers via a confidential course assignment. The focus here is to keep things fresh and innovative so the students do not fall into a routine that causes the students to get bored.

i believe in daily quizzes only because it allows the student to be confident in them seleves

kodee, can you share with the group your vision of how the daily quizzes fit into the learning model of your lesson plan? Sounds very interesting and I am confident other readers would be interested.

I'm also a fan of giving dailey quizzes, not only for the student to be able to confirm their grasp on the content but also so I can forecast the few students who may need further explanation and target them for extra attention.

Good reflection,Lauren. I've moved toward focusing on a few core principles, concepts, and/or terms per class. i challenge myself to remember how many passes at content that it has taken me to be able to explain a concept to them and try to give the students some number of times close to that to interact with the knowledge. I also try to vary the "form" of quizzes -
