Intrinsic & Extrinsic Motivators
Intrinsic: Im really glad I took this course because I knew nothing about either of these.I never thought about a student wanted to just complete a goal on there own I feel I should may be back off a little and not having it be about my feelings. Extrinsic: The reward system weather it be grades, rewards It really comes down to knowing you student and what they need ! What a great course
Bruce, each student is different. Rare to find a one size that will fit all so keep offering a variety of motivational triggers. Explaining the values of the skills you teach is important and I encourage you to continue along that track but I would also warn against relying on that as your only resource.

I think I always tried to show how my course could better the students life and thought that should be all the motivation needed, I see now some short term treats can be helpful in the dull times.
I totally agree. I was also very guilty of giving out extrinsic rewards such as cookies and candy bars. It seemed to work, but now that I recall, I ended up bringing candy to every lecture in efforts to keep up the behavior! Now I know other methods such as emphazing relevance.
Kathleen, well stated and one of the most difficult hurdles for instructors is realizing it is not about us. Our focus needs to be on our students and this is easier said than done but you have taken a great step forward.
