Motivation

Motivation in class is important. It is a skill for learning

LeeAnn, well stated. Easier to achieve a goal you can see versus a goal that is difficult to envision. The more they can see themselves in the role the more motivated they will be to do the work necessary to achieve the end result.

I teach on the clinical level and I use the end product to motivate my students. When the students see for themselves just what their future holds by finishing their education, they seem to have more motivation to drive further and work harder to achieve those goals. It is also effective when the students can see first-hand from someone who has dealt with similar situations as they have and have become successful.

Gilbert, are there any techniques you can share with your students how you have maintained your level of knowledge over the years? Students like to know how professionals maintain their high levels of knowledge and what routines you use to ensure your knowledge is at the highest level possible.

I motivate students by using a variety of teaching methods. I use powerpoints, mannequins, positive feedback, and group activities. I also emphasize the relevance of knowing the topic. For example, when teaching about diuretics, heart drugs, and nitroglycerin, I stress that these drugs are widely used by elderly clients and that the students will need to know about them in order to be safe health care practitioners. I'll incorporate overviews and summaries more often. Time is always the limiting factor.

Mohammed, what are some of the techniques you use to motive your students and what results have you experienced? Thanks for anything you can share.
