the lack of motivation in the classroom from one class to another

Majority of students really pay attention to the motivation that an instructor gives and will compare apples to oranges. We are all different in our own way how can we work together to change this with so little time in the classroom?

I agree with that statement. If you have twenty students in your class, you may have to use ten different ways to get all of them motivated.

Yes I do agree I am a instructor but I learned from fellow instructors by watching them they have quick adapting skills depending on class needs and student needs but it also matters if you CARE because if you don't care about the student or there learning then what is the student going to get out of the class me personally I try humor and moving around the class to engage my class room ask open ended questions to start discussions I even ask co workers to sit in and see if you see any place I can improve on even students I say if you learn a different way or know a different style of learning let me know because we instructors/teachers our students to and we never quit learning if you choose to quit learning your limiting your self a wise person said (Once students learn how to learn, nothing is going to narrow their mind. The essence of teaching is to make learning contagious, to have one idea spark another." the idea is to start the spark .

Paul, excellent point. For those instructors you mention I say - Get Over Yourself! It is not about you (The Instructor) if is ALL about the students. The best instructors are driven by research and the research is very clear - The days of the sage on the stage delivering a lecture are over and true results are achieved by engaging students and speaking WITH them and not TO them.

some instructor are resistant to change they think the student should already be motivated because they're paying to be here changing that mind set is hard to do.

The way I have overcome the comparison amongst instructors is that the two of us that are teaching the same subjects talk daily and compare our lectures strategies and make sure that the way we interact with our class the other instructor is doing the same that way noone ahs an advantage over the other one

I agree the Instructor sets the pace for the class when he or she walks in the door. When we have an upbeat attitude our students will pick up on that and respond in kind. Along the same thought, when we take our students into lab and complain about the equipment our students see this and follow our lead.

mayda, how are you able to distinguish between a lack of motivation and a possible learning disorder or lack of learning skill? For some students they want to learn and are motivated but lack some of the fundamental or literacy skills. Creating a safe learning environment also includes getting to know the students and understanding any of their limitations.

I believe that Motivation is key to students' success. In my experience, we can motivate our adult students in many ways, for example human understanding and connection to our students' circumstances, encouragement and support on tasks, extra time in class for clarification. In addition, educators must promote a safe classroom environment where students don't feel afraid to express their doubts and concerns. Motivation is an essential part of the learning process. Those students that lack motivation and are not captured on time by their professors most likely will drop the class or lag their feet and ultimately fail.

I do agree what your talking about, we should spend more time as team and prep our selfs to be on the same page to project the same and correct info.

I think if we have more communication between each other we can achieve this. And this is for the instructors that teach the same course.
