Confidence and Ability

Postively motivating students using the motivational issues along with the two motivators can ensure great upcoming leaders in this world!

Paul, if teaching was easy anyone could do it with success. When you have a student that appears to be more difficult to reach a solution could be as simple as having a candid discussion about your concerns. At the very least you will learn more about the student so there are really no negatives to having a conversation.

I have a hard time with the student who is in a shell and won't come out. It is difficult to know when to push them a little, or to back off. Pushing might make them break out or it might make them regress further. The confident students are easy. That is why I think it is a big temptation to teach to them and the others could become statues in a corner. I have to engage everyone.

I agree John some students lack the confidence of others starting out with simple tasks and achievments tends to biuld the confidence to a higher level. Then the task can be raised to a higher level thus bringing the student to a satisfactory motivation.

John, excellent example of hands on experience and active learning. Studies show that students learn more by doing than they do just listening to a lecture. The more active you can make the learning materials and fully engage your students the more they will learn.

I the diagnostics class that I teach I try to create a lab enviroment where a stident can pratice thier diagnostic skill on training aids that offer various degrees of diffuclity.
I can start the students on easier problems so they can gain confidence then move them to harder problems to raise thier confidence level.

Great upcoming leaders and........
I believe in your exclamation Pamela, but I would prefer not to isolate in that way. The motivation tactic you are infering to cna help anyone of any age on any project or task. These motivators have countless variants which allow teachers of any venue to tap into a student's motivating characteristics.

Ricky, great point and as they say practice makes perfect and in this case practice enforces the need for safety. Thanks for sharing.

In my class of industrial hydraulics. Students are often afraid when dealing with hydraulics because of the high pressures and the damage it can cause when testing in the wrong manner. I show them that if you follow the procedures and always think safety first, you can never go wrong. While at work, keep professional first and personal matters in the back of your head and you won't get hurt. After they gain the confedence and the theory of how things work. The ability to troubleshoot becomes second nature.

David, communication is key and one of the steps in establishing a safe environment for your students. The more students feel they can openly communicate and not be threatened the more they open up and allow more complex concepts to sink in and to learn. Great job and keep up the great work.

Open communication is key in my classes. I set up a regular classroom into a U shaped room. The students can all see eachother and help each other through difficult concepts.

Keith, redirecting your students to think differently is a quality that builds creative and critical thinking skills as well as enhances their problem solving techniques. Great job and thanks for sharing.

Yes accomplishing a task well and the first time will build confidence. But if a student is obviously struggling we as instructors need to focus in on the hang up. I run into students that can't think through the process. If I come up with a different line of questioning usually they will get it. We do need to be able to help motivate when we see failure.

I submit accurate evaluation of their food and tell them it's not personal it's business...they need to improve to whatever ability they are capable of.

I agree! We all want our students to become the next best chef wherever that may lead them!!!!!

I would agree, if you challenge the student and they are able to accomplish their task it builds their confidence in their ability, while at the same time if they do not get it right the first time as the instructor having the ability to help them understand by telling you the steps they have taken and then reinforcing what they done right and explaining what was done wrong helps to build their confidence in their ability to do it right the first time next time.

neelam, can you provide an explaination of some of your techniques on how you motivate and encourage students to accept the challenges of your class? Thanks for anything you can share.

James Jackson

I believe in optimal challenge.I encourage students and motivate them to accept challenge and when they see outcomes they have more motivation and interest to learn more.

Pamela, what techniques can you share that have been successful for you in motivating your students to become leaders? Thanks for anything you can share.
