Intrinsic Motivators
The discussion about extrinsic and extrinsic motivators is very relevant at my school. Many students come in with an interested high on the extrinsic end (pay) and it is our challenge to turn that into an internal, intrinsic motivator. What are your thoughts? Have you seen the same trends?
to find out who your motivators by asking the correct questions. Meaning using open ended questions
Robert, yes this is a very common trend. Those that are intrinsically motivated tend to receive the more extrinsic rewards. Those that focus on the Extrinsic also tend to not be fulfilled and experience early burnout in many professions. Studies in Cognitive psychology suggest we mature more and are more fulfilled when we find our value within our various peer groups. Through finding our intrinsic motivations and then working to fulfill those needs we find happiness and peace and also tend to be most rewarded extrinsically as a consequence of just being good at what we love to do. I have found this is worth sharing with my students and you may find value in sharing as well.

Yes Robert, unfortunately most students use money as the extrinsic motivator for going to school and earning a degree. A few will tell you they are going to school because their children motivate them to try harder.
