security in the classroom

It is imperative to provide secure envirnoment in the classroom for best learning. security brings more autonomy in the mind of students. Learning will be best at its highest level when student feel secure and free minds. as an instructor our job will be to make sure students get maximum security and autonomy in class participation.

geary, great examples and thanks for providing. Another one to consider is it is OK to disagree but you MUST support your opinion with facts. Teaching students how to support their position with facts and research is part of the continual efforts to ensure all students are information literate and understand the importance of critical thinking, problem solving and creative thinking.

The instructor should begin class by informing them that certain rules will be followed and that no one is above these rules. Rule 1 - everyone has a right to state their opinion without being told they are wrong by another class mate – exception would be a bold face lie. Rule 2 - you have the right to disagree with anyone in the discussion respectfully. Rule 3 – college is the exchange of ideas and that you can voice your thoughts without retaliation unless it is vicious or discriminator towards anyone or group. Rule 3 – You can disagree with the instructor. Rule 4 – everyone will read the PowerPoint slides and if you cannot pronounce a word or two, today, you will learn and no longer feel inadequate when you see the word(s) in the future. Rule 5 – students are encourage to help one another with the pronunciation of words. Rule 6 – anyone making fun of another student that is hurtful will be dealt with in private by me. My classroom is to be an environment for interaction and participation and that everyone can voluntarily or involuntarily (be called on) participate. In one class, I had students either rap the answers or to talk like their favorite TV actor/actress with some acting/body movements. Yes it did get out of hand but the students commented the class was great. Students must feel they can be part of the class whether they know the correct answer or not. I just want them to express their views. Rule 6 – it is permissible to imitate the instructor’s gestures or sayings. 

I feel this is true. You can create a non-threatening environment. Always do an overview. For me as an instructor I need to always be prepared and ready to begin.

Security is absolutely essential in the classroom environment. The students needs to feel safe and secure in the class and with the instructor before he or she can even begins to concern themselves with the classroom content.

I agree that the students will learn more and feel more secure when my job as instructor will be to make sure students get maximum security and autonomy by enhancing their motivation as an adult students.

Jason, students need reassurance from their instructor and from their peers within the classroom. Engage in discussions about how secure students feel and what they would like to see within the classroom to be even more comfortable asking questions and fully participating. By being forward and outwardly vocal on the topic you may experience a much higher order of richness in your experiences with your students.

I believe reassurance is the best security. Letting the student know it's ok to ask questions freely. Weather it's in front of the class or in private with me. Either way it always leads to a more fundamental learning enviroment.

Eugene, securing in the classroom is about students feeling safe they can ask any question and not have negative experience take place due to their question. The more open your students feel they can ask any question the more secure your classroom environment has become.

The security in my class is when I have studenteds participate by asking questions to make sure they have a full understanding of the topic. some will add info that helps other understand what has been said.
