Student security

No matter how correct or incorrect a student response to a question, their effort to respond is an open door for the instructor to respond. First I point out the positives or the correct line of his/her thought process. Even if the response is incorrect the instructor can lead with additional questions and turn it into a group discussion. This gives in my opinion the original student the feeling of leadership in the discussion since they were the first to make the attempt to repond. I find it makes them more secure in the classroom and more willing to continue to stay involved and motivated.

I agree the lead of the instructor to ask a question and then beat up a student if they have the wrong answer is wrong, find what is rite to the answer and expand why the correct answer is the correct answer. which does wrap up the rest of the classes security that if asked a question even if wrong support will be there from instructor

We need to understand their thinking in relavent to the question,as well as the lesson that was presented, and then adjust our questions and presentations as needed to achieve our goals in the classroom.

Dr. Felicia, well stated. Using the information you gain from your students is a powerful tool. We as instructors also need to make the most use of the current reality of our students to relate known topics to less known topics so students have a point of reference. The better we can relate what they know to what we want them to learn we can build better bridges to new knowledge, skills, and even behaviors.

I believe that an instructor can find something he or she can use or steer in the right direction when a student responds. That way the student won't be de-motivatived and others may actually be motivated to respond with their thoughts.

I agree with you. Sometimes an answer is completely wrong. I always begin by telling my students that their wrong answers is a learning tool for me. I explain that it helps me determine their thought process and where I could have presented material in a better or different way.

I agree, a student that responds to a question is still participating in the class, regardless if they answer the question correctly.
A positive response by the instructor will encourage other students to participate in the dicussion too.

I agree that a no is not good by itself, but sometimes a no response can lead to the instructor asking a follow up question. He can ask how did you come to that answer. Or maybe is there something from your own experience that prompted you to reply with that answer.

I agree I don't like the simple NO response from the instructor finding something positive in the students answer helps to keep them from feeling like they failed.
