candy makes math fun

I have 3 weeks of my 6 week course that is focused on math. Most of my students are not motivated to work on math problems during class. I offer candy to those that will come up to the board and try a problem, they don't need to get it right, just try.

Rosa, OUTSTANDING! Love themes like this and really works to get students focused on engaged. May not be applicable in all situations and in all settings but when it does fit it tends to work very well. Thanks for sharing.

In my Science class I offer "Eagle Bucks" to students for doing things out of the ordinary.
I reward those that choose to start working as soon as they walk-in, especially if their peers are still talking or walking around the classroom. They may get them for challenging questions or for tutoring their peers. With these "Eagles Bucks" they can buy school supplies or snacks from me. However, I truly believe that what they love best about it, is the recognition!

Daniel, treats or rewards can be a useful incentive. It is also important to do your homework and make sure you understand any food limitations of your students so you can offer each of them items they can consume. Some students may not be able to tolerate sweets so just make sure you have alternative rewards and allows students a choice.

Lisa, what conversations do you have with your students about the values of taking math seriously? Do your students know that those that work at math tend to get promoted faster? Working on math problems improves problem solving skills so no matter what profession they are pursuing, math skills sharpen the brain. Similar to how an athlete uses weights and exercise to do better at their sport, working on math problems makes your brain better at anything they want to do. The actual math skill may not be vital but the exercise that the brain receives while working on math problems will assist them in moving forward in any profession.
