I agree, I recomend using self-experience stories that required the use of theat particular subject with their chosen careers, this always prompt up my students! It's hard to see the importance written down on paper but when you bring it to life with real stories, than it might make sence to the learners!!

When I encounter self-doubt on a student, I make it a point to highlight that student's progress and a technique that has worked for me is when makeing small group activities or sessions, make that particular student the leader and they usually shine and helps them with their low self-confidence!

I deal case to case basis on my student, some is student is really good of pushing themselves and some is really need them to drive their emotion to get it what you want from them. But onece you get them going, their confindence level start building up by the time you know their self reliance start to work.

Mark, awesome that you relate your own experiences with your students. You become more of a person this way and students better appreciate that over time and effort they can be successful like you.

Miriam, great point and I like your focus on helping students understand the importance of learning then practicing. Over time and effort the mastery will develop. The focus now is on learning and understanding so they may later apply and evaluate what they have learned.

John, not always self inflicted. Some students simply were not provided the correct skills during adolescence and we as instructors may be one of their first positive role models. Be careful not to categorize too many students into the same category as this can cause you to lose focus on those students that need additional assistance through no fault of their own.

Linh , this is very common and a great reason that we as instructors need to lead by example and always provide a positive focus for our students. You never know when a student will be ready to receive your message so you need to always be on your "A" game.

In our culinary classes, I often use my own educational journey as an example. I tell students that I have not always been able to fabricate a whole salmon as quickly and effectively as I can now. The first attempt I made was a disaster, but I understood the concept. I just had to realize the my potential and practice the exercise until I it was mastered. My confidence with this particular objective comes from this realization and thus, mastery. This seems to give them the analogy needed to motivate them to try constantly.

Mindi, good to praise students as they make major leaps of understanding. Good also to have them discuss with the class how they came to this new level of understanding as it can be very important for students to hear from their peers.

Dorothy, OUTSTANDING. Pardon me yelling but I am so excited when someone really gets it. Most students are motivated but we as instructors need to dig at times to figure out how best to assist then in finding their ability to channel and communicate effectively. Thanks for sharing and bringing this critical topic forward.

Mindy, failure is part of learning and learning to evaluate your performance and to get better with each attempt is critical. Help your students to look at the learning process as the place to make mistakes in a safe environment so when they are on a real job site their mistakes will be few and far between. Everyone makes mistakes but those that learn and do not make the same mistakes twice are the ones that get the best jobs and get promoted.

Patricia, great point and good to keep your students focused on the positive. No one knows it all and a learning is lifelong.

Most of my students experience different degrees of self-doubt, because they have to learn new skills in the classes they take each new quarter; it only takes them a week to forget the skills they just learned, unless these new skills are constantly applied. In order to help my students get past these negative feelings, I remind my students that these are new skills, which they are not expected to master in one day and assure them that they will get plenty of practice, both at the college and in their professional future.

I find students experiencing self doubt on a daily basis. This frequent behavior stems from self afflicted alienation from the task. Whats new sometimes is hard to embrace and especially if it requires mastering a new technique. I find great joy listening to their concern and leaving impressionable footfrints so that they may inspired to follow and achieve their goals. I always repeat to them that learning can bring about many phases of self doubt and yet it allows us to become better autonomous achievers

michael, students often do not understand the importance of each subject that is part of a larger curriculum. Helping students to better understand the relevance and importance of each class to their career is a great technique and one I highly recommend. Thanks for sharing.

stacy, some institutions are using different types of orientation sessions to prepare the different groups for being in the same classroom. Someone who has been away from school for 15 years will need a different approach versus a student that is less than two years removed from high school. By providing each group their own orientation you can better narrow the gap of expectations for the first day of class and beyond. Just something to consider.

Carol, creating small wins that build upon each other is critical in the overall learning process. Good job being a guide for your students.

My fellow instructor has a dental hygiene student she was working with who was crying after the second week in the clinic because she did poorly on one of her instrumentation competencies and questioned if she was even in the "right" profession. She doubted herself if she can even learn to use all the different instruments. So at the final last week, she passed the clinic part with flying colors. She had a natural talent for hygiene which she questioned after just two weeks! Undoubltedly, she is one of the best clinical students in the group. She just needed to get past her self-doubt and see her potential.

I recognized the student that have this self doubt, if the student is keep asking the same question every five minutes. So I do get the stduebnt on the sides and really go over with him until he get the info he need. I coached them throught and follow up if he still need little help, this way their confident builds.

Yes This very truth. Is also happen to my student, I notice, in Culinary side. Recipes sometimes confuse them from a small info like "How to" read the recipes properly, like when the recipes are written in oz. vs. fl.oz. But when they understand that basic info how to distinguis them, then the student build confidence and also can work quicker. and when it materialized the theory of basic recipes reading, I praised them.
