Motivating the student is the key

The key to long term success in the class room is motivating students. My methods of motivation is relating the assignments and tasks my students undertake in the classroom to real life applications in their chosen profession

I agree, James.

Whenever I bring up real life situations in class, the students seem alot more interetsed and engaged than when we are just doing regular lecture.

They always have alot to add to the conversation and it really sparks their curiosity. For that reason, I bring up these topics regularly.

Glen,

My students are in a clinical setting. One of the motivating tools I use is that every day there possible employers are observing their attitude, attendance, knowledge and technique. This encourages them to do well with the hopes of obtaining a job upon completion of their training.

Glenn, taking your comments one step further would be to use your knowledge of your students to discuss life applications that you know have already taken place within the lives of your students so as to bring the lesson objectives directly to their area of interest. Making such connections to real life and to actual experiences can make a powerful impact on just about any student.
