Pair-Think-Share in Small Classrooms

I love the idea of the Pair-Think-Share. I see the benefits of empowering them to discuss with their peers without the intimidation of presenting their ideas directly to me or the entire class.

My classes are often between 4 and 8 students though, do you think there is a way to adapt this to work? It seems futile to break up 4 students into 2 groups to discuss. Would it be better to ask them to discuss it amongst themselves before reporting to me?

Teresa, it really all depends on what you are looking to accomplish. If your 4 to 8 students already discuss things well then there may not be any need to break them up into smaller groups. If you do find however that you have some students that would feel better talking to just 2 or 3 students versus the other 5 to 7 then there could be value in breaking things up. Hope you find this helpful.
