Students that don't call in when missing a day
We make our students call in if they will not be coming in that day. Reason is that we want them to be in employment setting. Like if you miss work!
Hi Timothy,
I love it! Our students have to accept that rules are in place to be followed and not broken! Your institution is really preparing students for the real world.

At UTI,There is no cell phones out in class or lab. If they are,They get a infraction or get sent home depending on instructor or if this is an ongoing problem. In the working world, you are getting paid to work ,not talk on the phone. They will fire you.Welcome to reality
Wow, great idea for suspension! I wish I could get my institution to adopt this policy. I think that is awesome for there to be some type of sanction for this. I feel like students should realize how the real world works and what better place to start.
Hi Craig,
A cell phone policy really does minimize the distractions with cell phones. We have a policy at my institution as well. The student is sent home and marked absent for the day if the cell phone goes off.

we have a policy of no cell phone use in class that will count against their professionalism grade if they are caught.
Hi Craig,
Talk to your DOE about implementing a cell phone policy. The policy really preares students for the professional world.

We don't have a call in policy either, but i feel this is a great idea because it does prepare students for being responsible in the work place. We actually have a professionalism grade that goes along with their class grade and lab grade. If the student comes to class late or breaks any of the school rules it counts against their professionalism score.
This is really a wonderful suggestion! We do not have a requirement for students to call in, and so generally they do not do so. Occasionally, a student will call, but they rarely do. It would be so much better if they did!
Hi Deborah,
At my institution we have a call-in policy. The student gets a warning for the first offense. The next offense is suspension. The policy works extremely well, and we have minimal students not calling in.

I have this same rule for my class. I explain to the students that just as they would call in to their employer to notify them that they are not coming to work, they should contact me directly to notify me that they will not be coming to class. Also, I prefer that they contact me and not have their classmates relay the information to me. It surprises me every time that students fail to do this. I feel that they know they are wrong, but are just avoiding me because they know they really should be in class. I agree that it is a good idea to have the students feel that they will get something (like information about what they missed in class) from me if they notify me directly. I will have to figure out how to integrate that into what I do. It bothers me that many students don't feel obligated to notify me even though it is clearly stated to them that it is their responsibility.
Hi Patricia,
Talk with your DOE about adopting a policy. A policy makes everthing so much easier, and everyone is on the same page.
Patricia Scales
We do not have a policy. This makes it very difficult on the instructor. Each instructor has a different set of rules that apply.
Hi Patti,
Awesome way to prpare the student for the real world. We have a call-in policy at my institution as well to help the students prepare for the real world.

we make our students follow the typical hospital call in policy. We use this because we are trying to prepare them for employment as well. In the medical field, they employees are so valuable and dependable, that we want our students to be viewed the same way.
We use a rewards to encourage professional behaviors. Students who notify their instructors gain more access to make up work, points, and such "carrots". While we work with all students to make sure they get the knowledge missed, the access to better grade rewards has proven to be a good incentive.
