Advising Self-Directed Individuals

One of the reflection questions asked if everyone benifts from an academic advisor. I think that everyone can benift from an academic advisor, but advising methodoligies should be tailored to the student. Some self-directed individuals may find advising methods used on non-self directed indiduals to be annoying. It is important to acknowledge the students' self direction and offer additional insite so that they will see the value in having an advisor.

Hi George,
You are right! Some students really need more guidance than others. Those who are more needy, you have to keep a close watch on them because they can certainly be a retention issue.

I think the key to advising is to try to get to know the student and determine their advisment needs from that point. Some students require very little advising, whereas others just can't get enough.

Hi Jennifer,
Advising is very important at the collegian level, however I have found that some students need more advising than others. Each student is different, and you just have to get to know your students to determine how much advising to give.
