Hi Michael,
Students must learn for every choice there is a consequence. They also have to learn to take responsibility for their own actions and stop shifting the blame.

I have had a few students in the past 7 years come forward with the same kind of statement after failing the course. I have found that this is the student that no matter how hard you try to explain to them that in life the decisions you make are yours but you repercussions of your actions are not. They still don't get it.
Hi Steve,
Nicely stated! Students have to understand that they have to work hard to succeed, and nothing is going to come easy and be given to them.

Hi Warren,
You have to get the students to understand that them failing rests on them. They did not put forth the effort to succeed.

I have had this happen a few times in me eleven years of teaching the students know what the objectives are they know how the gradeing is done and they are upset when they fail a test and they want to blame someone other the themselves when they calm down then it is easy to reason with them. then my first question is did you study answer no next question did you ask for help answer no.The following test results are much better.
I have encountered this scenario only a couple of times in 15 years of teaching. I too, explain the class and its objectives and goals as well as the fact they need to work for their grade. I also explain that to what little is invested, little is gained. Education takes work that many times takes away from personal enjoyment such as hanging out with friends or video gaming. I also ask people in the class, "how bad do you want it?" as far as achieving occupational success. Another encouragement to students is that learning is a process that takes time and effort. No one can expect to learn a trade or vocation overnight, but the more you focus on that goal, the more accomplished you can be.
Hi Katherine,
I have not experienced this, and I have been teaching at a for-profit institution for more than 23 years. My students know on Day 1 grades are earned and not given.
