Listening to your students
Some students need to know that the instructors are listening to their concern and responding to their questions in a manner in which is understandable to them.
Hi Dawn,
I concur! We need to respect our students, simply by listening to them. Everyone likes being heard. You get more cooperation from students when you listen to them.

I've found that when students are listened to they open up more and are more willing to embrace help. In addition they will be incline to not only listen to you but others.
Hi Courtney,
Yes! Students want to be heard. Students feel a sense of importance when we simply listen to them. Listening helps in many ways.

As a culinary instructor I get a lot of questions on recipe variations and have many students that like to discuss their weekend dining experiences or what they made at home. It is important for me to field their questions even if I think the answers are self-explanatory, and I need to listen to their stories so they know I am invested in their growth and development.
Hi Salvatore,
You have it! Students need to know that we genuinely care about them, and we truly have their best interest at heart.

So much of teaching and advising of students is made easer when active listening is employed. If the student feels you are epithetic to there situation and offer realistic options to problems and learning difficulties then sometime even disagreement and hard to hear answers can be shared and difficulties resolved in a manner beneficial to the student and the institution.
Hi Suzie,
Listening is paramount. We need to always give our students our undivided attention when necessary.
Patricia Scales
This is absolutely correct. Our students are very vocal to everyone if they feel like they are not being listened to by their instructors or their advisors. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be about school they just want to know that they are being heard. But, when they do have a question in regards to class material it is very important that the instructor portrays the information back clearly so the student understands it completely.

Hi Matthew,

When it comes to listening, we need to ensure the instructor is engaged with their associates. With that being said, the manager needs to make sure the students is their number one focus.

Hi Lance,
Our students should be given our undivided attention. Students like to know that they matter. When students feel that we feel they are important, it encourages them to continue attending.

Yes-by paying attention to and acknowledging each student as much as possible i find the attentiveness in class is increased and student participation and retention is higher
I have a master's degree in clinical counseling and working as a therapist is mostly about listening. I apply these skills to my classrooms as well. Students want to know they are heard and I use a lot of nonverbal cues and eye contact to make sure the students know that I am listening to them and hearing their concerns.
Hi Marvis,
Listening is key! Our students need to be heard without interruption.
