active listening
we have to always be actively listen to our students. this is an excellent way to know where their skills are every MOD.
Hi Donald,
Yes, these practices are very important when it comes to listening. I always paraphrase to make sure I am understanding.

Body position is important with active listening. One should be face to face and lean forward with your good ear. One should be at eye level and paraphrase message sent.
Hi Michael,
Most students will listen to what you have to say. There are some students who are disrespectful, and they are doing other things when they should be listening to what you have to say.

When I speak with someone and they are distracted (looking at watch, phone, etc.) it does send signals that they really don’t care what I am talking about. It also turns me off to future conversations with that person. They would lose credibility that they really care about me so I really don’t pay too much attention to what they have to say either.
If an instructor does with a student it definitely will have an effect on their learning.
Hi James,
Yes, we must treat our students the way we want to be treated! I respect each of my students. Students deserve to be listened to without interruption.
Patricia Scales
If we desire our students to be engaged in active listening, then we have to be the role models for that behavior. If we ignore them, turn away, treat them with indifference, we can expect the same behavior in return. Active listening is not only a behavior that emphasizes attention; it is also a sign of respect that what the speaker is saying is important.
Hi Katina,
Students need us to listen to them without interruption! You can learn a lot from just listening to a student.

Hi Hong,
Yes, listening is key! Students will stick around when they know you genuinely care about them, thus helping with retention.
Patricia Scales
yes , as an instructor I think being an active listener does show students how we care about them. This is the way for them to open up, and talk to us about their issues . Definitely, this would help to retain students in our environment.
