Students do need to see how each course is part of the big picture in their learning. In this day of covid, students are not allowed to be in a clinical setting and it is difficult for them to use their knowledge and skills. Sim labs are great, but not the same as real patient contact.
Design library instruction that demonstrates how research leads to empowering any claims students are making.
For example, for RN students, I could give them the following exercise: "The charge nurse where you work insists on doing ____________ procedure with ______technique. However, as a new graduate, you were taught that this technique is no longer valid and that is better to do _________ technique instead. Do you share this information with your charge nurse? Why or why not? If you do share it, how do you go about doing so? If you do not, why? What role, if any, does research provide in this example?"
Or, if it was for a student in cybersecurity: How do you present to the CFO of your organization that the company should spend ____ dollars more on a superior protection software instead of the less expensive software the company is currrently using? What do you say if the CFO replies: "We hired you. Why do we need this software?" What role, if any, will research play in helping you make your case and answer the CFO's question?
In order for student empowerment to occur there must be meaningful student involvement. Student involvement is built upon student ownership and investment. Learners need to be invested in themselves and their learning success. They need to make connections with their schools, programs and instructors.
Not just ownership but pride of ownership is so important for student sucess. When a student is proud of their school then they will strive to do better and be better.
Faculty must facilitate learning and must provide relevance to what is being learned.
This way students see the value why they need to learn the course activities and will face up to it.
By empowering the students to take ownership, they become more vested in their learning experience and have a tendency to succeed at a higher rate.
The on-line format is a great way to assist stuents taking owership by taking the concepts of the lessons and provide students assignments/opportunities to use them in real/simulated scenerios.
difficult times for group activities at this time, but this course is exrtemely helpful as new information as well as a reminder of other. Glad i am taking this course.
give students a community project, so they can see their real wolrd impact on the community
The more the student takes responisbility for the material to be learned the more "ownership" they will take.
Need to emphasize he students taking ownership of their learning and application
Teachers can use student empowerment activities to help learners feel engaged in the classroom. Engagement is a critical step in student empowerment, ensuring students have a say in their education. Whether it’s as simple as voicing if they liked a book or as intense as forming test questions for their peers, student engagement leads to feelings of empowerment.
In our on-line enviornement we as teachers should continue to use real life experiences coorelated with in the curriculum in order to engage the students better. In the end teaching accountability is important in maintaining the classroom ingegrity and molding all future healthcare students for success.
In an online or blended education world, ownership makes the virtual classroom more vital. In a physical classroom, it is easy to bring distracted students back as ownership grows. Virtual classrooms require more energy and mathods to develop owndership.
Difference between empowerment and ownership
Engaging the students and allowing them to understand the importance of the material will self motivate the student into applying themselves.
Engaging students in the learning process with real-world examples will lead to student investment -- which is criticial for the development of student empowerment-- students need to take resposibility for themselves & their future career success.
The first thing I do is find the individual strenghts of my students. I will then ask certain students questions to answer aloud that I already know they know the answers to. That way, it builds confidence in them without them even knowing it.
I will use real world experiences to teach the material by speaking to the students as if they are already in the field.
