The more I do the more it seams that I want to do. I have always had the problem of wanting to accomplish more than I have time to do.
I too can relate... Once I get going and stay busy continously throughout the day, it is hard for me to want to stop. I get alot done and I like multi tasking. Keeping busy makes me feel like I actually have a job to do and I get things done all in a timely manner. I do not like however, when you do know your job and all that you have to get done in that day and get lot's of interruptions.
I found the ideas of task urgency and importance to be particularly relevant on this front. There is only so much that can be done on a daily basis and if one can effectively and confidently evaluate the actual importance and urgency it can put things in a refreshing perspective. One step at a time, you get to what you need to. What you can't get to will have to wait until it is more pressing. Managing this feeling of squandered time helps me to really leave work at work and home at home. Life/work balance is so important to my sense of well being.
I suffer from this also, but it is due to my not wanting to say no to any request from students and other teachers.
Hello Tim,
I fully understand where you are coming from. I think we all wish to accomplish more on the job, and in our lives. Somedays I feel like I didn't accomplish a darn thing, but if I break the day down, I find that I actually did achieve a great deal.
After spending more than 20 years in the classroom, I have come to realize that life is too short to worry about everything, and that everything does eventually get done.
Everyday I make a mental list as I drive to school. I go in early to enjoy some quiet time, and to accomplish my tasks. It sure helps with me feeling prepared when I enter the classroom. During class breaks, I make needed phone calls or copies. The trick is to try and stay ahead of it all, and roll with it when something unexpected comes up. Trust in yourself and know that you will get your tasks completed.
