Urgency vs. Importance

All tasks will fall into a combination of importance and urgency. Important and urgent, unimportant and urgent, important but not urgent, and unimportant and not urgent.

Many find that they are always doing those tasks that are important and urgent because they spend the rest of their time doing things that are not important and not urgent. If we can spend more time doing those things that are important but not urgent, our stress is reduced, because things will seldom become urgent (at least not the important things).

I feel I'm always in the state of URGENCY and Importance!!! I work in the cosmetology program, there are always daily planning activities, customer service and loads of administrative duties/obligations to be met daily. At times, STRESS is at the TOP of my list. I hope to gain insight from this lesson.

Yes, when we have a to do list in place, we can identify what's urgent and what's not.

I agree I prepare a to do list and I prioritize all my work this will prevent any sense off urgency

Because of the complexity and increasing volume of the instructors daily requirement its best to create a to do list and number the importance of each task. this helps to prevent the creation of the immediacy scenario and helps guide the instructor through a smooth, even term

Yes, Luis, that is correct as I've elaborated to in another thread. I have a bad habit of making "do it now" lists and they eventually lose their importance and usefulness over time.

I've really taken something good from this lesson. I hope I can put it into practice.

Exactly! It is very nice to have documentation of everything we are doing in case we need to push back on people who want us to do even more!

Setting up the "To Do" list and prioritizing the items is a huge step toward getting the important and urgent stuff done when it needs to be done. Without some method to stay organized, everything is on a "do it now" system, and things that come up can overshadow and even replace things that may have more overall importance or urgency. If we establish and maintain our "To Do" list, we can easily plug in on-the-spot add-ons, and we have something to back us up when we tell the person who has just added something to our list why we might not be able to "do it now".

Indeed, if we attack important tasks early, we can minimize the amount of urgent tasks in our queue over time.
