Taking control of your time

I believe that we all control everything in our lives and how we manage our time .It took me years finally figure out my own system but it is really true .

Sharif, So true. It's really important to remain flexible and understand that everything is not under our control. While there is a certain amount in our life that we can influence, there is another large part that we've got to just accept and even let go of.

Dr. Melissa Read

I think time management is essential, but it’s very difficult control time and as there is a degree of uncertainty in everything we do. One has to learn to mold themselves to the needs and requirement of the job, thus keep moving and learning with each experience in life.

For some instructors, you are right Terry. Some instructors are just made to focus on one thing at a time. Others are multitaskers and get more done when they balance several tasks at once.

Time control and management works better if you stick to a task and finish it as soonn as possible .

I think very few people "own" their time. To own your time, you must be able to prioritize and manage it.

I am still trying to figure out my system. Now that I have gone from adjunct instructor to full time instructor, I think that it is important that I figure it out that much quicker.

I agree with you somewhat. I believe that there are things that we can control and that there are things we cannot control. That being said, how we react to those things that are not in our control is up to us.

Yes, we must recognize what is in our control and what is not, and focus on what we can influence. Otherwise, life can feel really overwhelming.

I think that to say that "we control everything in our lives" is an amusing illusion, and curls back on itself in a weird twist of auto-generated victim blaming. For example, each quarter where I teach, the department chairs are slammed with a huge clerical task in weeks 4 & 5 that leaves us chasing the bus for the rest of the quarter. No, it cannot be started sooner because the data are not yet available. I refuse to blame myself for that!

Yes, I agree with the statement but it can be challenging in any field of education. However, with the passage of time and experience one can learn how to adapt within a given schedule by prioritizing the importance of the task (organizational skills).

I used to complete tasks out of fear. I must admit that some of the ideas in this module were strangely familiar; however, I have certainly evolved since then. I like being in control of my time. Working ahead of schedule allows me to be forward-thinking and professional. I guess I'm a bit of a perfectionist, but I don't think it rules me. I agree with you, Brian, about prioritizing and time management being integrated.

Brian,
I think prioritizing tasks and time management are integrated. I do agree we control our own time and the process for task accomplishment in that set time is different for everyone. We do have complete control over our time and what we accomplish. Do what works best for you and your schedule.
