which obstacle are you?
I already learned about myself in the first module which will be of tremendous use in the future
Can you be a little bit of all the above? I really do think that I have a little of them all. I hope to be able to put some of the techniques that I have learned here to use in my professional as well as my personal life.
Sara, Interesting perspective and I can completely see where you are coming from. There are some events in life - babies certainly being one of them - that can completely change your point of view. Sounds like it's for the best.

Totally IMMEDIACY! Must do it all NOW NOW NOW! This can come in handy, but it gets a little OCD sometimes and I need to learn when it is OK to leave things for the next day (so long as they are not an urgent matter!). I have found that having a baby really forced me to accept that there are just things I will not accomplish today and be zen about it!
Coming from the culinary side of things time management has always been a factor in the way we conduct our day to day duties but in the educational field it brings these problem and solutions to a whole new light. This module has been helpful thus far in making sure I am able to prioritize my day properly.
Tom, Change doesn't always come easy but it sounds like you have a great vision and plan. Sometimes, that's all you need to get going in the right direction. Instructors who struggle with immediacy are often reinforced for what looks like organized and prompt behavior. Remember to take a little time for you, slow down every now and then and enjoy what life has to offer!

I've enjoyed this topic because it really brings light to some of the issues I have with time management. I need to overcome my immediacy issue as well as my insecurities about what other people think about my productivity. This is an inherent part of my personality and will require a lot of adjustment on my part. I'm extremely career oriented and fear that if I change the way I do things I may fall behind the pack and miss opportunities to further my career.
Nicole, Sticky notes on your computer work great. I've seen a lot of instructors work well with them over the years. As long as you don't get used to seeing them - and ignore them - they work quite well.

I came to the same realization, I am definatly part of the immediate obstacle. I find this to be very stessfull and overwhelming most of the time and I need to find better ways to deal with all my responsibilities. Making a to do list will help me slow down. Great class. In regard to the forgetfulness, I started to use sticky notes on my computer that will pop up prior to me closing my window. It's a cool feature on Windows 7.
Elizabeth, Student issues are really hard to resist getting to right away. It often makes sense to help our students first - especially because of the complexities that they experience in school, work and life. When we know students in need are taken care of, we can then focus on other less urgent matters.

I seem to have problems with both immediacy and procrastination. If it directly involves a student issue, I always feel the need to help out as soon as possible, even when it is not an appropriate time. However, if it is something that can get put off, like reading through the lesson plan for next week, or looking up recipies I will almost always put it off. I used to be much better at making lists, and it seems that I am going to need to start again!
Marie, Sounds like an important breakthrough. Immediacy is tough for many instructors. It's often rewarded with promotions as our employers watch our productivity increase over time. But it can take a toll on your personal life too. Taking time to slow down a bit will likely help you tremendously. Focus on chipping away at important tasks during your days but then taking breaks and enjoying what life has to offer.

Excellent to hear Valentina! I do hope you put the skills that you've learned to good use in the future.

I have also come to the self-realization that I am part of the immediate obstacle! I find myself attempting to be as efficient as possible. I am starting to think that I should slow down as take things as they come, although I now fear my forgetfulness and hope that I can start to work through that as well. Does anyone have any tips or advice? I sometimes find myself making list of things to do, but misplacing them or starting another list and leaving things off.
